Dresden Basket

On our way back from Maryland we stopped in Dresden Ohio so Deb could do a little shopping. There was a Hot Rod show on Main Street but I didn’t see a ’57 Plymouth which was my first car. This basket was at Main and 7th Street, a symbol for the main employer in town.

Maryland Bowling Pin

Driving West on I-70 after dropping Julia off at University of Maryland, Deb spotted this bowling pin quite a way off the highway. We had to circle back and get this image at “The Bowler” in La Vale, Maryland at Exit 40 on I-68. Actually at Winchester Road and Route 40. We didn’t stop for the pizza or subs but it sounded pretty good to me.

Ohio Golf Ball

Now this is a Golf Ball! Here I am outside AA Pro Shop located in the Mastodon Mall on Ohio 79 a few miles South of Newark Ohio and 4.5 miles North of I-70. Thanks once again to Julia for spotting this one.

Pink Elephant

It was early Sunday morning so I knew that I what I was seeing really was a Pink Elephant! This cute guy stands outside Wagon Wheel Liquors on SR67 in Fortville, IN complete with glasses and a martini. Melynda, who told me about the chicken in Noblesville (see below) cued me in on this beauty.

Pendleton Cow

We were winding up our “Big Thing Trek” and were looking for the big bull that our real estate agent Gail had told us about. Melynda included it on her map and we thought we had it with this cow outside Cohron’s Manufactured Homes on SR67. Something didn’t ring true since this cow and calves were in great shape, not as Gail described them.

Gail’s Bull

Now here is the bull that Gail told us about. She said it is painted regularly and my guess is this one fits the bill. It was also dead-on with where Melynda has it one the her map. It stands proudly(?) outside Karmon’s Produce on SR67 between Franklin Road and Post Road. Update: I’ve been by this bull many time since and it seems to be a different color each time.

Julia’s Muffler Man

Julia spotted this big guy along side I-69 outside Muncie, Indiana. It was early in the morning and I was surprised that she was awake. We stopped on our way home from the Davidson cottage in Michigan to grab this image.  MacAllister Rental at Exit 41 has this guy watching the traffic go by. Muncie, by the way, is the home of Ball State University. Update: I’ve driven by many times and he is well cared for, with new paint and moved closed to the storage building.

Car Sale Gorilla

We were on our way from Indy to Prudenville along I-69. Right after I told Deb and Julia they had to keep an eye out for Big Things, Deb spotted this inflatable at the “Huge Car Sale” near the US127 exit in Ithaca, MI. We got off at the next exit and circled back for this photo opportunity.

Noblesville Chicken

I recently moved to Indianapolis so there is a entire fresh stock of Big Things. Melynda, a co-worker, told me about this Big Chicken. And since I have a special affinity for chickens (see below on this page) Debbie and I had to hustle out to the Chanticleer Cottage in Noblesville Sunday morning to get this chicken. Update: there’s been a change of hands, this chicken is now painted a bland white color, blah!

Indiana Golf Ball Mailbox

While not the largest “Big Thing” on this site by far, seek this teed up golf ball is a worthy addition. Deb and I were on a “Big Thing Trek” when we saw this Golf Ball on SR13 just south of I-69 in Indiana. The mailbox is for a house across from the Gravel Lawn Cemetery.

Nipper!

I really don’t know why it’s taken so long to have an image of Nipper and me on this web site. I’ve been surrounded by Nippers for years, many of them BIG but I never had my picture taken with one, must be taking for granted what you have. Trust me, don’t take what you have for granted. I would like to have one of these BIG nippers at home but don’t know where I would keep him. Maybe Julia’s room.

Berlin Muffler Car

This category may be the hardest to fill out. My pal Romeo gave me a tip on this Muffler Car in Berlin. This Meineke shop is on Rt. 30 just south of Berlin-Crosskeys Road. I haven’t seen the muffler being driven but I bet it is road-ready.

Staughton Pots

These pots make up a two-fer along with the watering can above. I didn’t expect to find these pots but they were on the other side of the C&O viaduct. These images were taken October 13, 2001. As you can see, unity in our country is everywhere.

Whately Milk Bottle

Got this Big Concrete Milk Bottle up in Whately, Mass. Just at the northern Town border is the Whately Central School office with the bottle out front. I don’t know why the bottle is there. Just as we were taking this photo the town policeman pulled in but didn’t ask what was going on. Must be a lot of people getting their picture taken with the milk bottle.

Runnemede PT Cruser

I got a call from Bird Dog Mike who was on his way home when he saw this inflatable PT Cruiser outside LaFlam Chrsyler Plymouth in Runnemede, NJ. I didn’t have time to get the photo that night and took the risk (always dangerous with inflatables) that it would be there on Saturday morning. It was!

Cabala Bears

There’s a new Cabala Outfitters at Exit 17 on US-23. This is in Dundee, Michigan, a place where I spent some time calling on Dundee TV back in the early 80’s. Hi, Don! At any rate, I almost had to wait in line to get this photo op. Didn’t get a chance to go inside but this place was huge.

DeWitt Apple

Up in DeWitt, Michigan there is the Edwin J Leyanna VFW Post 671 on Old US-27. There must be something about Apples ’cause they had this one out front on the pole and another painted on the front of the post hall. Anyway, it was the 4th of July and they had the flag flying.

Michigan Uncle Sams

These inflatable Uncle Sam’s are a very rare “triple.” Driving into Michigan on July 3rd there are several fireworks stores at Sterns Road (Exit 1) and US-23. The left photo was taken at Star Fireworks. they must have great prices since they had a man directing traffic into the parking lot and a huge pile of empty fireworks boxes. Across US-23 on the west side of the road was the All American Fireworks store (center.) The crowd wasn’t quite as big but they were hustling some pretty good numbers here as well. The Uncle Sam stood watch over the entrance. Notice the “No Smoking” sign, Duh! The Uncle Sam inflatable on the right is the one that caught Deb’s eye as we were driving up 23. Actually she was looking for a White Castle so we could get a fix, but she spotted this guy up on his platform and decked out for the 4th of July. Quite the find.

Lancaster Amish Couple

The Amish couple stand in welcome outside a Holiday Inn in Lancaster, PA. If you didn’t know it already, this is in the heart of Amish country. Shoo Fly pie anyone?  We took these images after dropping Julia off at Millerburg College. She was starting an orientation session prior to leaving for Europe on an American Music Abroad program.
