Doug Murdick’s Fudge

Alex “Eagle Eye” Davidson was riding shotgun on our way to the Traverse City Cherry Pie tin (see below) when he spotted Doug Murdick’s Fudge store at 4500 US-31 just North of Traverse City. Right on Traverse Bay, the view is great. Murdicks also has fudge and ice cream stores in Charlevoix maybe they are related. Not the greatest photo but it was late in the day and the sun was in my eyes.

Traverse City Cherry Pie Tin

Before Alex’s sighting we made it to the Traverse City Cherry Pie. There seems to be some dispute about this pie and the Charlevoix Pie regarding size. I don’t care since both are pretty big. This pie tin just south of Traverse city has a plaque from the Guinness Book of World Records.

Elk Rapids Swan

Oh boy, here was an unexpected treat. On the way to Charlevoix to get the Big Cherry Pie with the Davidsons (see Food and Drink) when fate struck and we got this Big Swan. Outside the Elk Rapids Chamber of Commerce building was this Swan (don’t call it a Goose! Right Meg?). It has a history going back to 1966 when it was built to carry Miss Elk Rapids in the Cherry Festival and Harbor Days parades.

Charlevoix Cherry Pie Tin

No doubt, the Charlevoix Cherry Pie is BIG as well. Located just south of Charlevoix in front of of Fire Dept Station #2 at 6591 S. US-31 (look for the red and white water tower) this pie rivals the Traverse City Cherry Pie. I’ll leave it up to more exacting people. I just know both are BIG and both are cool.

Limberlost Beer

One of my favorite bar/restaurants is the Limberlost in Houghton Lake, Michigan. I like to go to lunch here. You can sit outside on the deck, view the lake, and have a cold beverage and something to eat. They are kind of party central so if you want a relaxing weekend evening in Houghton Lake you might stay away from the Limberlost.

Detroit Tiger – Yeah!

We were at the Davidsons and were getting ready to go Up North when we spotted this inflatable out with a GTO show. Not exactly one of my best finds but I am addicted to Things Big and couldn’t pass up the shot. We blocked the parking lot at the Starbucks while getting the shot. I was humming a Jan & Dean tune.

Detroit Tiger

My first trip to the new Comerica Park in Detroit and here were some Big Tigers and Baseball Bats. 2 hours before the game and there were all these people. I may have to come back in February (brrrr!) to get a photo without the fans. The Tigers lost to the Bronx Bombers 5-1 who had 5 hits and 5 home runs. I miss Tiger Stadium where you were so close to the field but I liked the rest of the new ballpark.

Chipotle Burrtto

A little later in the parade Julia and I were excited to see this large foil wrapped burrito float going down Rangeline Road. Some of the folks along the curb were wondering why this guy was getting his picture taken. First with the burger, then with the burrito. I was getting hungry by this time.

We were at the 4th of July “CarmelFest” parade when lo and behold a float appeared from Bub’s Hamburgers. It’s a great little local burger place with a very short menu. Baby Bub’s, Bub’s and Big Bub’s. If you eat a Big Bub you get your picture taken and put up on the wall. Special waffle fries to go with the burgers and ice cream for dessert if you want.

Patriotic Eagle

We were going to the airport to pick Julia up on July 3rd. In case you didn’t know, Indiana is fireworks state. You can buy all sorts of fireworks here. You just have to be careful since you cannot take the fireworks on the plane with you if you are leaving the state on a plane. You would be much better off driving your purchases out of state.

Keystone Clothes

A while ago these Jeans were on the side of a building on Keystone Avenue in Indianapolis. They are not there any longer which just goes to prove that you need to “seize the moment,” “strike when the iron is hot,” “waste not, want not,” or some other such old saying. As long as we are dealing with clothing there also was this pair of shoes on the same building so I could double up with my photos.

For Crying Out Load

For Crying Out Loud is the title for this Field Art as we call it in Indiana. My best Birddog, Melynda told me about this Hippo a while ago but I didn’t get it until recently. It’s on a field belonging to a now retired auctioneer. We pulled into the muddy field and finally I found a reason for the 4-wheel drive on my Cherokee. I don’t know if this is larger than life but it’s pretty camp.

Colorado Muffler Man

Here I am “working” again. Actually we finished early and had some extra time outside Denver and decided to drive up to Estes Park for lunch. After a great lunch at the Estes Park Brewery we headed back to the airport. While driving along Colorado 66 and near Lyons I spotted this giant in someones front yard. I went to ask for permission to enter the yard and met Steve, hospital who, lo and behold, said that he had visited this website. “Sure,” he said. “Go take your photo.” Thanks Steve, you have a great view of the Rockies from your yard.

Heathrow Bear

We were leaving England and had some time at Heathrow before the flight. (I won’t mention how much time Ben and Annie had due to flight delays) but anyway where else is there a store like Harrods in an airport. It would be like having a Neiman-Marcus at Kennedy Airport. At any rate this shop had cavier, chamapign and many of the finer things in life. I went to the 7-11.

Tower of London Guard

We were in England and left our tour group to go to the Tower of London, search you know where Cromwell spent some time enjoying the hospitality of the Crown. As usual we included a trip to the gift shop and right outside was this Bear Guard. What a surprise! Not quite a Beefeater Guard but I did get him to smile.

Shakespeare & Ice Cream

Got this ice cream cone in Stratford-on-Avon during our England trip in 2004. I have received some emails from Brits with Big Thing sightings but didn’t have time for anything but opportunistic shots. I wonder if the Bard likes ice cream.

Riverbend Golf

With my update of the website I found some images that go back a way, to 2003, which were never posted.  Here are two.  We were up in Detroit for Thanksgiving with the Davidsons and instead of shopping on Friday my brother-in law, Greg and niece, Erica ventured out on a cold, rainy day to get some Big Things I had researched around the city.  As we were on our way to this mini-golf course to get these Big Animals Erica spotted a Big Apple atop Blake’s Big Apple Orchard.  Check out the Erica’s find on the Food and Drink page.

Another found image from yesteryear that is not finding the light of day, so to speak.  It was a wet, rainy day, the Friday after Thanksgiving in Detroit with the Davidsons.  Greg, Erica and I went on a big things safari.  The Muffler Man stands at the Riverbend Mini-golf and Driving range.

Big Apple Orchard

With my update of the website I found an image that is 12 years old and for some reason was never posted.  I need to do it now.  We were up in Detroit for Thanksgiving with the Davidsons and instead of shopping on Friday my brother-in law, Greg and Niece, Erica ventured out on a cold, rainy day to get some Big Things I had researched around the city.  As we were on our way to a mini-golf course to get a couple of Big Animals Erica spotted the Big Apple atop Blake’s Big Apple Orchard.  Founded in 1946 by Gerald and Elisabeth and their 13 children it’s still operating today for folks who want to pick their own apples.  An unplanned capture!
