St. Johns Beer

We were on our way from Indianapolis to the cottage Up North in Michigan and stopped to see my Uncle Ed in St Johns, Michigan. We went out for lunch and then downtown to find some Czech pastries. We missed out on the pastries since the bakery closed at 1pm, but these was a celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the St Johns Fire Department. We came across this big Miller Lite bottle right there in downtown.

Lucy the Elephant

Lucy here is a National Monument. I guess I didn’t treat her with the proper respect because as I was paying the bridge toll into Margate, NJ I asked the attendant where the “big elephant” was. He looked at me with derision.  I should have shown some more respect.

Kissmobile!

A favorite Bird Dog gave me a call Thursday morning telling me about the visit of the Hershey’s Kissmobile Cruiser to the Indianapolis area. Since I have the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile she knew I had to have the Kissmobile. She was right. Deb and I got this Saturday morning right after the Big Sunblock bottle at the CVS. At any rate the Kissmobile collects donations for the Children’s Miracle Network and makes visits at affiliated Children’s Hospitals. What nice service at the same time as advertising.

CVS Sunblock

On our way to get a photo of the Hershey’s Kissmobile we stopped at the CVS store where Deb, the ever vigilant Bird Dog, had previously spotted this larger than life bottle of Sunblock. It was sitting right on the front counter so I asked the checkout gal if I could take my picture with it. She gave me a strange look (not a new experience in this pursuit) but I showed her a couple of photos from my travel book and then she said “go ahead.”

Evansville Uncle Sam

On our way to visit New Harmony, an intentional community,  where we were to meet up with Catherine and Dale we passed through Evansville.  Before we got there we hit a bonanza of Big Things.  Most were Animals at Jim Hipp’s Nursery, but we did get this Big Uncle Sam outside Busler’s 24 Hour Market.  I think he needs a little more care than he gets.

Louisville Lady

We were in Louisville celebrating our 35th Wedding Anniversary. Of course I have a photo of the big Louisville Slugger Bat (See Big Objects page) but on the way home we made a quick side trip to Jeffersonville, Indiana to grab this Big Lady metal sculpture just across the border in Indiana. She stands proudly nearby a lumber yard on Dutch Lane.

Big Ketchup

I just filled up the Big Thingsmobile (See the Kissmobile and Oscar Meyer Mobile below) and was going into Sam’s when out in the parking lot was a NASCAR showcar. It was the weekend of the Brickyard after all and the town was celebrating NASCAR. One of this car’s sponsor was Heinz and there was this inflatable Heinz squeezable bottle. Since Deb was out of town I was on my own to get a photo. Fortunately Ann Wilson was working the exhibit with her husband. She was most gracious and took this photo for me.

Corona in Tulum

It was a HOT and sunny day in Tulum, Mexico. We had walked out to the Mayan ruins, poked around for a couple of hours and then walked back. I was feeling pretty wiped out. When, lo, Deb said “look at that will you.” And there it was, this big Corona bottle. So I went into the park store and had a couple to cool down. Hey, Karen, I bet if you drank this whole bottle of Corona, you would get up and dance the Macarena.

Portland Lumberjack

Here I am “working.” This time in Portland. Jim, Brad and I were out seeing a customer and of course I had researched Big Things. I wanted to get this guy and he was BIG! Unfortunately there wasn’t much space for Jim to take the photo without getting run down. Thanks Jim for risking your life.

MSP Goose

I was just up in Minneapolis and spotted this Big Thing which looks like a big Canadian Goose on Nicollet Mall. I think it was a Canadian Goose, it would have maybe been more authentic if there were a mess of cast goose droppings everywhere like in real life.

CES Gibson Guitars

Of course I’m not the only one that thinks that Bigger is Better. Gibson Guitar obviously thinks so too. Flanking the entrance to their tent at CES they had two Big Guitars. While Steve was taking these pictures I heard a voice call out, “Hey, no Big Pictures allowed here.” It was Dick Valente coming to meet one of his customers.

CES iPod Case Display

One of the benefits of my job is I have some input into our display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year. Of course, I recommended we have a BIG iPod package! So we did it and here’s the result. Pretty cool, and it worked out well as part of the display too.

Cherry Hill Mall Jigsaw

Ben and Annie spotted a lot of Big Things at Cherry Hill Mall last Christmas and told me we had to go there! Since Sears.com sent Ben an LCD telephone instead of the wrench set I ordered, I needed to make a trip to the mall anyway so I was able to get this image. Unfortunately, even though I wrote a pretty good letter, I still haven’t received a response yet from Sears. Let that be a lesson.

Mantua Tooth

Here’s another I’ve found in the archieves from the trip to New Jersey last Christmas. Ben, my son, Bird Dogged this one for me. He was having lunch at the Telford Inn, in Mantua, NJ and when he walked out afterward he spotted this big tree tooth in front of a dentists office. There are many old Inn’s in New Jersey and most have pretty good food, but they don’t all have a tooth like this one.

Hong Kong Tums

We are at a Dan Ryan’s restaurant in Hong Kong for a taste of an American style grill. Lo and behold, there hanging from the ceiling was this Big Tums. Greg, of course, had his camera and I grabbed an extra chair to stand on trying to elevate my game so to speak.

Herff-Jones Ring

I get a lot of calls from people I know saying, “Hey, you have to get to…” and then tell me about a Big Thing Sighting. This time it was Deb at Fishers High School, the new school in the Hamilton Southeastern system. I left work and rushed over. We had to move some of the Herff-Jones set-up, they were very helpful as a matter of fact. Nothing like an unexpected find.

Maryland Fruit Stand

I was knee deep in Soybeans to get this image in Maryland at the Rainbow Farms on Rt 50 near MD 662. Maybe you don’t think it looks like much but there was some workmanship put into this roadside attraction, and attract me it did!

Delaware Strawberry

Down the road from the Dunkin’ Donuts at Millcreek Farms I found this Big Strawberry. Actually it was a car from an amusement park ride, probably a Tilt-a-Whirl ride. I always like the tilt-a-Whirl, but never sat in a strawberry car.
