Franklin University Mortarboard
Even though Steve didn’t spot this, the Big Thing professional in me was able to make the stop in Columbus a double dip with this big Mortarboard hanging over the middle of the street on the campus of Franklin University near the Frasch Hall parking lot F. Check it out.
Columbus Gavel
Birddog Steve Harper called this one in from Columbus, Ohio in December, just in time for us to stop on the way to Philadelphia for Christmas. This was harder to get than it looks. The gavel is in a reflecting pond and or course since it is winter there is no water. However the floor of the pond is very slick. I jumped in from the edge and nearly went topsy turvy.
Thanksgiving Cow
On the way back from Thanksgiving at Meg and Greg’s (thanks for the hospitality by the way!) we dropped down on I-275 to Ecorse Rd west (M-17) to get this cow. I’ve got lot’s of cows on this site as you can see below. This Carry Dairy cow is on top of a building that is not exactly a dairy. More of a “Party Store” as they are called in Michigan. Selling beer (of course), wine, cigarettes, milk and lottery tickets there are a plenitude of places like this. This almost like the drive thru beer stores in Ohio, note the One Way sign to my right. No expense spared!
Sullivan’s Hardware Salt
Southeast HS Spartan
We were in Springfield, Illinois visiting the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. It is the 200th Anniversary of Lincoln’s birth in 1809. After lunch at the Cozy Inn restaurant – “Home of the Hot Dog on a Stick” we went over to Southeast High School to get this shot of their Spartan mascot. It was raining pretty hard – Deb stayed in the car to get this shot (turned out not to be so good.)
Springfield Lumberjack
Even this photo doesn’t give you a sense of how hard it was raining on this Thursday afternoon when we were after this Paul Bunyan Muffler Man outside the Lauterbach Tire Shop on Wabash Ave. in Springfield. It’s a very busy street and took some time to get across the street. Meanwhile I was getting pretty wet – what I don’t do for this hobby!
DC Mall Eraser
We made a trip out to DC the last week in October with Jerry, Beth and Greg for the Jon Stewart “Rally to Restore Sanity” on the Mall. Not only were we able to add our presence to the turnout but as an added benefit I was able to get this Big Eraser. There’s another Big Eraser like this in Las Vegas which you can see on the Bird Dog page. I think they are the same size.
Curtis Orchard Archer
On the way to Springfield, Illinois we stopped at Curtis Orchard and Pumpkin Patch in Champaign, Illinois. They’re open from July thru mid-December. You can pick your own apples and pumpkins here. They have 29 varieties of apples available to pick as well as events for the entire family. Oh, by the way they have this copper Indian Chief Kesis, of the Kickapoo tribe of eastern Illinois.
Palmer ACE Muffler Man
Habig’s Halloween Spider
This was the finale to the Saugatuck trip and just about 5 miles from home. This crafty spider was constructed in front of the Habig Nursery in Westfield, Indiana. Note the Big Trowel in the background, this is a trademark for Habig’s, they have another one outside the College Street store in Indy.
Joy of Life Rainbow Trout
“The Great Rainbow Trout” is the name of this sculpture located in front of the Joy of Life art gallery in Douglas, MI. The Saugatuck/Douglas area is an artsy resort area on the Lake Michigan shore just south of Holland. Great place for a get-away any time although I suspect summer and Christmas are the high seasons.
Logansport, Indiana Bulls
Both of these Bulls are on Market Street in Logansburg, IN. The one on the left is in front of Haps Old Fashioned Ice Cream Sundae Parlor and the guy of the right is next to Mr. Happy Burger. I would guess they have common ownership, notice they both have bibs on. It was too early in the day to get a banana split and the burger joint wasn’t open yet.

You’re Getting Sleepy
My favorite Birdog and #1 fan called me to say that this Serta Sheep was going to be in front of the hh gregg stores headquarters. Karen told me about other items as well, like the Kissmobile she spotted. hh gregg is a regional, going national, appliance and electronics store. They’ve had other inflatables out front in the past like the Sirius Satellite radio dog.
Meridian Street Ghost
Well I guess this image should be in the Big People tab. We were driving down Meridian Street in Indianapolis, between 86th and 96th street when we spotted this Big Ghost. I’m not sure if a ghost should be on a Big People tab, but what is a ghost but the current state of a past person.
Woody the Root Beer Man
This is Woody the Root Beer Man in Oglesby, Illinois. Wow, a drive-in! I was holding my root beer float when Henry Moore – that’s M-double O-R-E, (he made a point of getting the spelling right) introduced himself. Makes you wonder how many times he delivered that line. At any rate he was delightful. He owned the restaurant for 50 years, purchased it after WWII, and then sold to his son. Now he is an employee. This was a man living his dream. Thanks Mr. M-double O-R-E. The float was good too.
Wisconsin Pumpkin Silo
At some point during a prolonged car trip, like this one through eastern Wisconsin, there comes a point – well you know the rest. Going after this Big Silo was one of those points. All this for a pretty lousy Big Thing shot. On top of that Meyer’s Market was equally disappointing.
Mustard Museum
On the Wisconsin trip I wanted to stop at the Mustard Museum in Mt. Horab. We planned to stop there on Saturday morning. At breakfast in the Wisconsin Dells Friday morning the USA Today I bought to get the Soduko featured a story on the museum – it was National Mustard Day Saturday! Mt Horab was planning a big blowout since the Museum was moving to another town. Anyway, when we got there Main Street was blocked off for the celebration. Food, drinks and a good time, too bad we couldn’t stay longer.
