Julia and I were on our way to College Park when we stopped to have some lunch on the last leg of the trip. We ate lunch at this place. Barbara Fritchie’s home-style restaurant where almost everyone know each other, but welcomed strangers.  Try the meatloaf.

Sirius Satellite Dog

We had just started out on our drive to Michigan for some vacation time when we spotted the Sirius Satellite Radio Dog being set up in front of hh gregg on 96th Street. We pulled into the parking lot and got this image. The fellows setting this up asked if I knew the ex-RCA crowd now at Sirius, it wasn’t until later that I wondered how he knew I was an RCA guy.

Prudenville Chicken

Well, we made it “Up North” and were enjoying our vacation on Lake James outside Prudenville. I made a trip into town to go to Ford’s hardware and spotted this chicken outside the Lake Break snack shop. You can get Ice Cream, Pizza, Ribs and of course Broasted Chicken.

Elsie the Cow

My Uncle Ed told me about this big cow in downtown Elsie, Michigan. On our way home from Prudenville we stopped at Ford Cemetary where my folks are buried, as well as many other family members. Aunt Libbie and Uncle Frank lived close by so I spent time as a youngster in Elsie. I didn’t remember this cow, but it’s right on W. Main outside the Elsie village hall.

St. Johns Big Boy

I spent a lot of time cruising the Big Boy restaurants on 8 Mile Road as a teenager. Their strawberry pie was my favorite but the “Big Boy” hamburger was a Big Mac before we had Big Mac’s, with it’s own secret sauce and all. I had to include this home town favorite.

Big Buck Beer Bottle

This may become my favorite image. Imagine, a 47 foot high Big Buck Beer Bottle! Doug Osburn pay attention! This bottle is in Gaylord, Michigan and there is another Big Buck Brewery in Auburn, Michigan that has a “Big Buck Beer Bottle” out in front, go figure. By the way they have a great menu as well, go eat there. Credit to Glen McCone for the painting on the bottle.

Flint Muffler Man

Here is another Alfred E. Newman derivation Muffler Man near Flint Michigan. He is outside the Bargain Hunter Store on Atherton Rd just west of Dort Highway. He has a nice Hawaiian shirt but can’t get around because he’s fenced in. Thanks to Roadside America for the info.

Steve Alford Shoe

It seems that everyone in Indiana knows who Steve Allford is, a former star IU, Indiana University basketball star. Here’s his big shoe. At any rate he has a motel in New Castle, Indiana. The lobby is a basketball museum, if you get the chance stop in.

Fan Day Colt Helmet

This was on the field at the RCA Dome for fan day. We were able to walk around the stadium, look at available seats. Of course, as of Jan 27th, the Colts are in the Superbowl, so it is about time to get this image on the site.

Yorktown Auto Supply

We were on our way to Muncie, IN for our annual holiday shoot of Big Things. While we were driving along SR32, just entering Yorktown, I noticed this big fan belt. I almost was rear ended when I applied the brakes to turn around. This oversize fan belt hangs in front of Yorktown Auto Supply, just West of downtown Yorktown. The things you find when you are not looking for them!

Muncie Lumberjack

This really BIG guy is a is not a Muffler Man, too big. He is pretty impressive standing outside the Timbers Lodge on the corner of Kilgore (SR32) and Tillotson across the street from the rail line. We didn’t stop at the Lodge since it was only 10am. Thanks Steph!

Muncie Frog

Muncie Indiana seems to have more Big Things per capita than most cities that I’ve visited. This Big Frog outside Dick Carnel’s Ceramics, Tiles and Carpets at 2001 Cranville Ave is an example. Time your visit here right and you can go across the street to Miss Kitty’s for karaoke on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Thanks to Steph for this sighting.

Brown County Ice Cream

Umm, ice cream! Got this image down in Brown County in a town named Nashville (Indiana, that is) when Debbie and I were celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversity. It’s a town filled with shops to browse in, eat in and walk past. If you are ever down that way and want a very nice dinner I suggest you eat at the Story Inn.

Univ. of Maryland Terrapin

Sometimes it takes the cooperation of other people to get the special Big Picture. I owe the sighting for this big Terrapin to Julia since she sighted it at a Univ of Maryland football game. She saved it for me until Parents Weekend. Then Deb talked to a couple of special people who were the ushers that allowed us to go onto the field in the endzone to get this image. Thanks Sid,  you guys showed a great sense of humor! Update: I received a nice note from Sid a little after I originally posted the image.

National Highway Gorilla

Julia and Deb were on their way from Maryland to Indy when Julia eyed this beauty at Exit 62 on I-70 (which just happens to be US-40, the National Highway. Rainbow Industries rents inflatables, tents, etc and this gorilla stood out front. We got this image on the way back after dropping Julia off at UMD.

Longaberger Headquarters

Here is the headquarters of Longaberger Baskets. What an enterprise, 7 stories high. I’m standing on Rt. 16 (the Woody English Parkway) just West of Hanover, Ohio and the building is in the background. I don’t know if this really qualifies as a Big thing but it could.
