Oshkosh, Nebraska Goose

In “The Goose Hunting Capital” as Oshkosh deems itself you can find this large flying goose at the corner of US-26 (Ave A) and Main Street across from the Oshkosh Superette. I’ve been to Oshkosh, Wisconsin and now here, I wonder if there are other states with an Oshkosh. By the way, Oshkosh is about halfway between North Platte, NE and Scott’s Bluff, both good places to visit.

Cody Trading Post

Here’s a bit of serendipity — we stopped for the night in Fort Platte, Nebraska and before dinner stopped, for some reason, at the Fort Cody Trading Post near our motel. Surprisingly it was more than a “cheap gift shop.” In addition to the expected shot glasses, key-chains, stuffed animals, they have a Buffalo Bill Wild West Miniature Show that is fascinating. The show, made by Ernie and Virginia Palmquist, took 12 years to carve and contains over 20,000 hand carved pieces….many animated! At any rate while browsing I noted a framed Smithsonian magazine with a Native American Muffler Man featured. When I asked where this big fellow was I was told he was right out back! Thanks all at the Fort Cody Trading Post, you made my day.

Big Steel Guy

Unplanned and kind of in the proverbial “middle of nowhere” we found this big steel guy probably created by some bored welders.  I have not planned on visiting. We were just driving across Nebraska on US-20 from Souix City, Iowa to Valentine, Nebraska. If you have never driven here I would urge you to make the trip. You drive through the eastern part of the Sand Hills of Nebraska. The Sand Hills is a region of mixed-grass prairie on grass-stabilized sand dunes in north-central Nebraska, covering just over one quarter of the state. (Thanks Wikipedia for this description). Anyway we stayed the night in Valentine, NE. A very friendly town, lot’s of authentic cowboys and close to Smith Falls, the tallest waterfall in Nebraska located on a small stream tributary to the Niobrara River. The state park there is very nice and was under-used when we visited.

Klown Museum Doll

Appropriately in a town that calls itself the Klown Kapital of Nebraska – Plainview is home to a Klown Museum right on US-20. There are 4,800 Klown Dolls in this small museum. I’m, pretty sure they could bill themselves as the Klown Capital of the world. I’m sorry we were there on a Sunday when the museum was closed they offer free tours and bottled water which we could have used, it was 99 degrees. This image is “Stumpy the Klown” and is the museum mascot which stands out front (stumpy since it was carved from a tree trunk – get it?)

Anderson Erickson Dairy Cows

The Anderson Erickson Dairy in Des Moines, Iowa has these two, Annie and Eric standing out front at the corner of University and Hubble. This is a nice twosome, one not normally seen. Generally I only find the larger mother cow. Eric was added later.  More information on the Annie and Eric and the Anderson Erickson Dairy can be found here. Enjoy!

Iowa Pitchfork

A pitchfork like this is something you would expect to find in Iowa. And it’s a beauty. Created by Clarence Martin in 2003 it stands next to the Custom Steel Service building. If you look closely you can see the strings of lights wrapping about the sculpture. I was there in the daylight and don’t know if it is lit up at night or only for special occassions. If anyone from Ames,  Iowa knows, send me a note.

Sac City Popcorn Ball

Sac City, Iowa – what a place. A small town (pop. 2,086) located in the rolling hills of Northwestern Iowa has a major claim to fame. You can find the “Worlds Largest Popcorn Ball” enclosed in a glass fronted building. It was created at Nobles Popcorn Farm on February 28, 2009 by 253 volunteers. The ball is built from 900 lbs of popcorn, 2,700 lbs of sugar (yum) and 1,400 lbs of syrup and water. I guess if I lived in Northwestern Iowa in February I would be one of the volunteers for sure. I love popcorn!

Grinnell, Iowa Duck Daze Duck

In Grinnell, Iowa we visited the Merchant National Bank on Main Street. This bank was designed by Louis Sullivan, a prominent mid-West architect and mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright and often called “The Father of the Skyscraper.” He designed many famous buildings from Chicago skyscrapers to many mid-West banks. This bank is a very good place to visit, they have a docent in place. At any rate, enough history, this duck was used to promote the Duck Daze and Derby fundraiser to support youth in Powershiek County. I bought a duck and entered but haven’t heard if I won.

Heavy Metal Corn

I researched Iowa Big Things and knew about this metal corn cob, however I was running short of time and was on my way to the Big Nickel in Iowa City. But as life works out, we drove right by this special metal corn cob. I drove around the block and stopped to get this beauty. Where else but in Iowa does someone have a Big Metal Corn statue. I love it!

Iowa City Nickel

Imagine growing up in Iowa City. Wouldn’t you think that this Big Nickel would be something that you knew about? It is right on Dubuque Street on the way out of town. Not the case, as I can personally attest. When I told Dan (Iowa City born) about this sight he knew nothing about this, nor did his buds who he consulted. Just shows what we can miss in front of our eyes.

Chiropractic Clinic Spine

This 20 foot tall spine is carved from a tree trunk. Appropriately it is located in the backyard of the Rexroth Chiropractic Clinic in West Burlington, Iowa. We took this photo while accompanied by new Bird Doggers Ann, Beth and Jerry. It was Ann’s suggestion that I take my shirt off to “make a better photo!”

Florida Coney

Spotted this Big Coney Island on A1A in Indialantic, Florida on our way to the condo we rented for a few days following Ernie and Sally’s wedding in Orlando. We went back to get the photo and since we like a sale we picked up 4 of the Coney’s. Wanted to see if they were actually “Udderly Delicious” – not bad, but not Detroit style coneys either.

Redfish Charlie’s Monster

Next to the Cocoa Flea Market in Port St. John, Florida is this Monster advertising Redfish Charlie’s Bayou Grill and Tiki Bar. Looked to be a pretty laid back bar. With a slogan like “It’s OK by Me, If it’s OK Bayou” who could not have a good time. Especially if you ride a motorcycle. They have a big BIKERS WELCOME sign as well. I didn’t have my colors with me or I might have stopped in.

Wedding Fish

Here’s another found image from our trip to Florida for Ernie and Sally’s wedding in April, 2011. We were traveling on West New Haven Avenue in West Melbourne when we spotted this Marlin on the front of Strike Zone Fishing. We stopped and visited. They have over 10,000 Fish, Hunt and Paddle products for sale. The store is clean and well ordered. If you like fishing you have to stop by, just look for the Big Marlin out front.

Firestone Firehawk

On our way to rent a tuxedo for Ernie and Sally’s wedding when road construction around the Mall caused us to circle around and come in the back way. I guess there is a reason for everything since we ran right into this big inflatable in front of the Firestone dealer by the Mall. The Chief Photographer had her camera with her so it was only a matter of just jumping out and getting the photo.

Birthday Buffalo

We were returning from my sisters surprise birthday party in St. Louis and stopped to get this Buffalo that I had spotted on our way west. Not sure how big buffalos actually are, but he’s pretty good size. I have another buffalo this size from Jim Hipps Nursery in SW Indiana, near Evansville. That photo is also on this page.

Home Show Guitar

The Indianapolis Home Show is the first event that I associate with ending Winter and looking forward to Spring even though some years we attend in the snow. We see some of the same vendors each year making it somewhat comforting to attend. This year we found this booth for a cabinetmaker that had this Big Guitar. Turns out he made this guitar just for fun. Imagine owning a 16 ft. guitar. He made this in only a couple of weeks. Pretty cool!

Backyard Birds

We found this bird supply store while shopping at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market. Later when we went down to pick up some birdseed and peanuts for our backyard feeders we saw these birds on the front of the building. Having her camera ready the Chief Photographer was able to snap this photo.

Colts Helmet

The Colts made it into the playoffs as a Wild Card after a pretty awful season (by Colts standards) due to most of their key players being injured most of the season. We hadn’t seen a live game during the regular season but tickets became available at the last minute so we scored a couple for the game with the stinkin’ New York Jets. The Colts lost but I did get this Big Colts Helmet. Not much of a consolidation.

Pennsylvania Coffee Pot

This Big Coffee Pot is on US-30, the Lincoln Highway, in Bedford, PA. It was designed and built in 1927 by Bert Koontz to stand out front of his gas station. It served snacks and ice cream until 1937 when it became a restaurant and bar. There was once a Greyhound bus stop there providing plenty of customers. It was moved to it’s current spot in 2004.
