Bird Dog
Tips

I have been receiving tips of "Big Things" from people all around the globe. While I have saved them I did not take the time to publish them on this site. Well here they are. Even though you may see a reference in this page don't let that stop you from dropping me a line. Let me know what's near you.

On this page I have deleted references to e-mail address to protect the innocent who are using company time to surf the web. While converting from e-mail to this web page I may have screwed up a message or two. If you are on the receiving end, don't get mad. Give me the benefit of the doubt, message me and I will fix it. Life is too short to get upset about this page.

Here are reported "Big Thing Bird Dog Sightings" by State/Province/Country.

ALABAMA

Found your page through a link from the Cool Tricks & Trinkets Newsletter, and found it interesting (yes, I know I have no life). I noticed most of your big things are from north, since that is where you are from, but if you ever get down south, I've got an unusual thing for you...

In the center of town in Enterprise, Alabama, there stands a monument to the boll weavel. If you don't know what a boll weavel is, it's an insect, and it's detrimental to the cotton crop. Now, if I remember the story correctly, (which I probably don't, it's been a long time) the farmers in that area were growing cotton. The boll weavel moved in and ruined the cotton crop. The farmers began growing peanuts (or is tobacco?) and got richer than they ever did growing cotton. They erected a monument in the middle of town to the boll weavel, complete with a fountain and a large, golden boll weavel. Now how great would it be to have your picture made with a big insect?!?! Didn't see any big insects on your website!

Just a heads up for you....

I notice you have a few shots taken in Alabama. If you get up to Anniston (just off I-20, about half way between Birmingham and Atlanta), check out the Giant Chair at Miller Office Supply, 625 Noble St. (256-236-6396). It's about two stories tall. It is an office chair circa 1970.

ALASKA

McNeill, Shane K

Just saw your pictures on your web page. Interesting hobby and FYI, I think I fall in the category of having no life.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that if you ever make a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, there is a town about 15 miles east of there called North Pole. As you can guess, it is fixed up for the Christmas spirit year-round. On the east side of town, there is a Santa Claus house which also has a HUGE Santa Claus out to the side of it. It would be a great addition to your collection.

Keep going with it! Looks good.

ARIZONA

Maybe you never get to Arizona? Just north of Phoenix in the town of Carefree (of the song "Carefree Highway" fame) there is the world's largest sundial. 7 miles east of Carefree at the entrance to Tonto Hills (an expensive place to live) is the world's largest Kachina Doll. (Both 'world's largest' titles were told to me ... I have no idea if they are true)

If you need more statistics or directions let me know. I'm sure you'll find more 'big' items in this area ... i just can't think of them at the moment. If you think you may actually come here, I will start "big" shopping for you and keep a list. There are a lot of touristy and unusual things to see. I'm now remembering the Mining Camp Restaurant in Apache Junction ... they have something BIG .... Paul Bunyan and/or a frying pan ... I could call and check. One of the odd things to me is at BOB (Bank One Ballpark - the one with the roof that opens and closes for airconditioning more than rain) - where there is a swimming pool for folks who want to watch the game in real comfort. Have you ever!

I'm curious as to what your job is that you travel. It would be nice if each of you pictures at least said what city and state they were in - I didn't see any in Arizona yet ... is that right? I know the Grand Canyon wouldn't fit your collection ... but it is really a whole different experience from movies or pictures and worth it at least once in your life. Did you see the movie "Grand Canyon" with Kevin Kline, Mary McDonnell, Danny Glover, Mary Louise Parker, Steve Martin, and Alfre Woodard? (1991)

I'm beginning to ramble .....

Have fun with your collecting!

Sincerely with Blissings*,

Suzanne

Thank You for your time, attention, work, service you provide and Love you share.

Quiet your mind Open your heart Breathe

*"Blissings" is my way of supporting you as you follow your bliss and to me has a more misty, mystical connotation than "blessings" which has the connotation of the hit-n-miss sprinkling of holy water at some church services -- sometimes getting drenched in spots, sometimes being missed entirely. Here in the West we have systems which lightly mist water in the air to keep us cool outside and its feeling of total immersion in coolness without being drenched is the connotation I intend to convey with my change in spelling... (what an extensive, wordy explanation ... I'm doing my best to convey ... that you are loved and appreciated and supported in your path to Peace and Love!)

Hi:

Ran across your website and surfed around a bit (even though I was supposed to be working, lol). I wondered if you've been to Arizona and taken pictures of the ads for Duncan Farms? There are these huge life like flat wooden things promoting their farm. A huge baby - like three - four stories high. A huge farmer and tractor, a huge rooster.

When I get out that way when fall arrives and we can breathe the air again, I'll take some pics for you. Duncan Farms is a pretty cool place - for the price of 12.00 you get a large cloth bag and get to go out to the fields and fill it with whatever is harvestable (is that a word?). It can be overflowing - just has to be in the bag. Great savings and organic veggies and fruits.

I wish you well in your travels.

Mary

Hi Jim,

I was looking at your site-it's pretty cool. I found it through this e-mail that Yahoo sends me about cool sites. Anyway, if you are interested, I know of a giant baby in a field you may want to take your picture with. As you leave Phoenix, AZ and head west towards California on the 10, it's on the right side of the road in a field. It's a giant cut-out of a baby and there's a cut-out of a life-sized guy (on a tractor, I think) looking at it. It's pretty funny.

By the way, if you pass through Tucson, avoid eating at the Waffle House. I got sick after eating there.

Dear Jim,

I toured your website and I must say I'm impressed! Thanks for including a link to my page. I'll be sure to notify you if I change addresses, register a new domain name or whatever. I'll also, with your permission, link to your home page from my miscellaneous links page. I think anybody who finds my pages of interest would also be interested in yours.

If you ever find yourself passing through Arkansas, e-mail me beforehand and I'll draw up a list of big things to photograph in the state. There's a thirty-foot Budweiser can painted on a silo near Mena, for example. The world's largest charcoal grill is in Magnolia. There's a giant (about 2x) eagle advertising icon for War Eagle boats in Monticello. Somewhere around Hope, I think, there's a water tower painted as a watermelon to go with your South Carolina peach. Lots of things not mentioned in my pages. Try Dinosaur World at Beaver.

I've bookmarked your page so I can visit again. So long and thanks!

Sincerely,

The big artichoke is outside a restaurant in Castroville, California; the artichoke capital of the world. I was directed to your web site by Linky and Dinky. I'll keep an eye out for ya.

Hi,

I found your web page quite by accident, as in it showed up in my search while I was looking for something else. What a nice surprise it was, too. So, in a spirit of "bird-dogging", I'm going to send you several e-mails about some of the neat large things you take pictures with if you ever get out to California. I'm in Texas now, but California is my home state, and I grew up taking these "big things" for granted. I've tried to find photos on the web to show you what I'm talking about, so I'm going to send them one at a time, so you don't have a super-huge download full of pictures.

I hope you haven't already seen them ... if you have, just remember it's the thought that counts. **grin** Thanks for sharing your web-site, it's a lot of fun.

"Be careful where you point that imagination, it's loaded!"

Well ... those roadside america folks have really combed the nation. *sigh* I used to work for Mr. Bell in 1976 ... I lived right behind this dinosaur in Cabazon. Anyway, if you ever get out to California, photos just don't do Mr. Bell's work justice. He also did the statuary work at Knott's Berry Farm ... he had an art studio there for many years. My claim to fame is I've crawled up into the dinosaur's head to change the light bulb that makes his eye glow red. Ha-ha-ha, Andy Warhol would be proud of me.

Cheers! Janelle

Klamath, California is a tiny little wide spot on the road on Highway 101 in Far North California ... about 50 miles south of the Oregon border. Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox live there. I wish I had a picture of the old statues that were there when I was a kid, but they tore them down and made these newer ones in the late 60's, adding a wave, a wink, and voice to Paul. For a little kid especially, it's awesome to jump on big Paul's foot and have him say, "ouch!" or "that tickles."

Theresa Monroe

Dear Jim:

Here in Santa Ana, CA at the John Wayne Int'l Airport there's a larger-than-life bronze (or some kind of metal-appearing substance) statue of John Wayne. Ironically, John Wayne was opposed to the whole airport idea so this whole thing was done posthumously. It's kind of a joke to us long-time residents. There's also a huge donut right off the 405 freeway in Inglewood as you approach LAX. This donut's been seen a lot; for example, in Randy Newman's "I Love L.A." video.

Love your website - what fun!

Theresa Monroe

Hi, it's me again. I see you alread have the LAX donut - I should have visited first. I did think of two more, though. There's a big inflatable gorilla on the north side of the 22 Freeway in the Garden Grove/Westminster area, and there are some big dinosaurs out at Cabazon of the I-10.

TM

Theresa Monroe

I remembered another very well known one out here. In the city of Baker (on the way to Las Vegas from here) there's "the world's biggest thermometer". Seems to me as if your next family vacation ought to be to SoCal!

Looking out for ya,

tm

Hello,

I must say I had a giggle or two while I was checking out your page. The next time you are in California, in the Monterey area, check out Castroville "Artichoke capital of the world" On the main drag you will come across a Giant Artichoke, if you time your visit right who can enjoy the artichoke festival. Definelty worth a picture!

I know, another chicken, but I just thought you should know. In Petaluma, about 40 minutes north of San Francisco, there is a big chicken. I believe it is actually bigger than any of the other chickens you have on your site. It's at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Petaluma was known as the Chicken Capital of the World. We actually have a Butter and Eggs parade every year. So, if you're ever in Northern California, you've been warned.

Also wanted to let you know I enjoyed your website immensely! Good luck,

Laura

Sbmonroe

Well I just took a quick cruise through your site (trying not to spend too much time on the net) - I just love it. I didn't look at everything - my computer's pretty slow -- but you need to know about Chicken Boy, if you don't already. I don't even know if he's still around. Used to be at Future Studios in Los Angeles. His motto: Too Tall to Live, Too Weird to Die (or the other way around). You must find him - he's your kind of chicken.

Take care ~ Amy

PATTENAUDE,JEFF

The Santa Barbara Lemon Festival employs the use of a very large lemon they truck around on a trailer for advertising purposes. When driving from Kansas City, Missouri to Lenexa, Kansas (about 40 minutes) there is a very large tire on the side of the freeway, maybe 25 to 30 feet tall.

Darelynn

There is a big Lemon in Lemon Grove, CA.(a suburb of San Diego) Also, have you ever gone to Universal Studios? I don't know if that "counts", but there is a super large chair, table, telephone, and I forget what else.....(That's in Annaheim, CA--but I think there is one in Florida now, too)

Jano

I think you need to include a picture of the life-sized dinosaurs in Cabazon, CA just outside Palm Springs, CA on Interstate 10.

Ran across these in auburn Cakifornia. They were built by a local dentist, or so I was told. Giant artichoke in front of restaurant in Castroville,CA-the artichoke capital of the world.

ps- cool site.

Just stumbled onto your webpage. I noticed the Randy's Donut picture and thought if you are ever near LAX again, take a 20-45 minute (depending on traffic) jaunt south on the 405 and you will soon see a golf course on the right hand side with a giant golfer. No idea what the golf course is called, but it's kinda hard to miss.

As for the teapot, this is extremely obscure and it wouldn't count for the "purists"... it's actually a water tower in Kingsburg, CA with a spout and handle added to it. But it is (and deserves to be in all caps) ABSURDLY big. :) Kingsburg, CA is about 45 minutes south of Fresno on HWY 99 (or 3 hours north of Los Angeles). Here is a link with a picture of it:

http://www.fresnobee.com/man/projects/millennium/kingsburg/kingsburg3.html

Also in Kingsburg, a giant "Dala Horse", it's some swedish thing. Here is a link with a tiny picture. If you look closely you can see someone standing next to it.

Hello, great site! I do have a question...the giant indian featured under your "big people" section...you said it's between modesto and san jose. My parents live in San Jose, when I go down to visit them next I would like to visit the giant indian.. I realize part of the fun of getting to these giant oddities is the adventure trying to find them, but is there any chance you could give me better directions to the Indian? thanks a lot, -eric.

If you ever get out to Los Angeles, there is a Muffler Man in the community of Malibu on Pacific Coast Highway. He stands on top of a La Salsa Mexican food take-out restaurant and is wearing a Mexican hat and serape (like a poncho). If I ever get out there with a camera, I'll take a picture for you.

Sincerely,

Bob Perry

P.S. Great Site!!

Since i see you do make it to California, along Highway 99 in the city of Turlock, there is a large earth moving bulldozer with both dirt and rocks in it's scoop, right along side the highway, it can't be missed , it is on the westside of the highway. I can't think of the name of the company offhand, but if passing through our area, it's difficult to miss. The bulldozer is actually and office building. Carolyn

OK, the other day Scott came into my office and gave me this and and the following two images from a junket he and Dr. John made to Key West. They had finished a meeting in Miami and had some extra time so they decided to go to Key West to see if they could get into any trouble. After a couple of BIG Rumrunners at the Tiki Bar they had their hands full! Scott 1

Scott 2 This is a Wharf Rat posing atop what I can only assume is a bar knowing the participants in this boondoggle. Too bad Dr. John didn't make it into any of these photos.

Outside a Dive Shop Scott found this big air tank advertising their services. I don't know why it took 5 years to get these photos to me but better late than never. Scott 3

Very interesting hobby, I'm glad you've found something you enjoy. I noticed your icecream cone picture is tiny in comparison to the Twisty Treat stand in St.Petersburg Beach Fla.

It's an working ice cream stand about 2-21/2 stories tall shaped like the product. That would be a good one for ya...The soft serve ice cream is great there too!

Good luck

I enjoyed touring your site. The hobby is peculiar, and so, I'm afraid are the types who spend time there. Thanks for sharing. There's a giant potato in front of the potato museum in Black Foot, Idaho. Black Foot is about halfway between Pocatello and Idaho Falls in the southeast part of the state. It also serves as the gateway to Craters of the Moon National Thing to See. A friend once gave me the following directions to Craters of the Moon: Drive north to Blackfoot and take a left. It worked - just one of the wonders of Idaho.

Hi,

I just visited your big site. Pretty cool stuff. I don't know if you know about the large Radio Flyer wagon. I saw it recently in Chicago at the Navy Pier (it travels around the country I think). At any rate, it's the "little red wagon" we all grew up with, except that each wheel is 8 feet in diameter. I'm pretty sure you could still see it on the radio flyer company site.

I enjoyed your web-site. A few possibilities come to mind. I know of a place where there is a cow that I think is bigger than the one you are pictured with. It is just off of I-90 in Janesville, Wisc. which is a little north of Rockford, IL.

There is a big Patriot sitting in a chair on Route 25 near Elgin, IL. and there is one of those huge chairs you can sit in which is located at Rockhome Gardens near Arcloa, IL. I can give a little more precise info if you are interested.

Enjoy your endeavors.

10/20/2000 PEORIA JOURNAL STAR

Vanna rises to her throne
With a mighty hoist from her dutiful attendants and scattered honking from admiring motorists, a resplendent and repainted Vanna Whitewall once again ascended her throne Thursday after a lengthy touch-up. Vanna, the 30-year-old fiberglass landmark for Peoria Plaza Tire, 1800 SW Washington St., had suffered age-related beauty problems, including peeling paint and rock dents. But Ozone Enterprises in East Peoria, which does fiberglass work on boats, spent the past three months rehabbing the 450-pound, 17½-foot-tall lady. Ozone gave her a gleaming finish, brighter eyes and modern shoes. Vanna has sported a bikini for years — even during cold months — because the clasps on her skirt/sweater combo had rusted and broken. But Ozone fixed the clasps, and she’ll wear the warmer attire until spring, when the bikini will return

Jim,

I e-mailed you awhile back to let you know about "big things" in Indianapolis, Indiana. You already had the Ralph's Muffler guy and the giant spade, but I knew of some others. I got started looking, and there were so many big things that I decided to make a page of my own of photos I took around Indianapolis... here it is:

http://www.commonplacebook.com/gallery/my_photos/00_big_things/

I hope that when you get back to Indy you have a chance to add some of these.... I've had a great time tracking them down. I think I've got most every thing in town, but my friends, who are now bird-dogging for me, have been telling me about big things within a day's drive of Indy, so I'll need to add more this spring and summer when I get a chance to check them out.

I don't know if this is available every year, but in Ligonier, Indiana is a marshmallow factory. Apparently there are only about 5 factories in the entire country which make marshmallows, and several of those are in Indiana. Every year they have a marshmallow festival, which includes the world's largest marshmallow. I can't describe it numerically, but it was LARGE. IT was sheltered by a tent to keep bees and such off it, but it made my 6'3" husband look small.

Good luck with your zany page.

Hey, there is a giant Paul Bunyan in front of an automotive place in Muncie, Indiana. They dress him up in a Santa suit for Christmas time!

Hi. I was, until recently, a college student in Muncie, Indiana. I caught your web page on Yahoo and thought you might be interested in a few big things that can be found in Muncie. First of all there is a big purple hippo on McGalliard...well, it's not really that big, but it is purple and it is interesting.

Second of all, there is a large lumberjack outside of a bar called the Tall Timbers on the corner of 32 and 332 (I think those are the streets). Finally there is a large green frog outside of a carpet outlet on Granville. These might provide interesting additions to your collection. My friends and I have pictures of ourselves with all of them!

Greetings from Northern Indiana. I was in Penn Yann last year. Nice little town. Down to gist of the e-mail. Two big things. On US 31 North past Kokomo towards Grissom AF base you will find some very large furniture on the east side of the road. I think it is between Grissom and Peru. Also, in Donaldson, Indiana (Plymouth) you will find Ancilla College. It has a very very very large statue of Christ in a field. I was brought from Fort Wayne when something that the nuns owned there was closed.

Good Luck in your pursuit

there is a huge bull statue in Audabon Iowa

Hi!

You have a great web site. I was looking under your category Animals and I just wanted to let you know that in Audubon, Iowa there is Albert the Bull, who is about twice as big as the bull that you are pictured with. : )

Keep up the interesting hobby!

Kate Dolezal

Just a quick note, don't miss albert the bull in iowa, we have some family pictures which your site brought to memory of a huge (forty foot tall, if i recall) cement hereford bull named Albert. Also in regards to your cow picture, horns and an udder are completely compatible. Most breeds of cattle have horns which are shorn (removed) while they are calves. In most deer, however, the bucks have antlers and the does don't. Not a hard and fast rule though, as some does do have small antlers, perhaps as often as women get mustaches, I just don't know!!!

You have to have your picture taken in Kansas City. In front the Nelson Art Gallery there are two giant sculptures of shuttlecocks. They are about 15 feet long and are exact giant images made from metal.

KENTUCKY

Hi, Jim! Enjoyed your web page. I have a couple of suggestions in case you ever want to come here to Louisville, KY.

There's a big rooster (very similar to some of the others on your site) at the food mart in Rooster Run, Kentucky on highway 245 between I-65 and Bardstown. If you're ever in town for a distillery tour or to see the bar where Jesse James was shot, you might want to stop by. Come during the Kentucky State Fair, which is in Louisville and features a giant talking doll named Farm Bureau Freddie. It's pretty goofy; somebody hides nearby with a microphone and talks to the crowd through Freddy. And of course while you're in Louisville you'll want your picture taken with the ENORMOUS bat at the Louisville Slugger Museum. The building next door has also put up a huge "window" with a giant baseball coming through it. There's also the Colgate Clock across the river in Jeffersonville, but maybe you don't want clocks--after all, they're often big.

The Louisville Zoo has a huge Jackson's Chameleon statue. I like it a lot.

If you're here around Derby there are sure to be lots of big things around. Do hot air balloons count? They're here for the Derby Festival and they come in a vast variety of shapes and sizes; liquor bottles, chickens, paint cans, Shriner hats, champagne bottles, the Energizer Bunny, etc. Lots of fun. And there are also always lots of other big inflatables around town that time of year for the various festival events.

Happy hunting!

In Owensboro, KY, we have a big tool belt with tools at a local hardware store and a big "little slugger" bat, football, etc. at a local sports store. We use to have a really big grocery bag with food inside at a Wetzel's grocery store but they tore it down a couple of years ago when they sold the lot.

Mr. Hejls,

I enjoy your pictures on your web page, my children also enjoy having their pictures taken with "Big" objects. I have some "Big" things for you. You may or may not have heard of them but I didn't see a picture so. . .

1. The Louisville Slugger Museum in Louisville, KY has the bat (the bat is taller than the building) in front and a 21 ton glove and ball inside. You can take tours of the factory also.

http://www.slugger.com/museum/index.htm

I really enjoy these kind of things so I'll keep an eye out for you.

Mike Cable

I happened upon your page via a listserve I'm on, and thought that if you ever make it to Louisville, KY, you should REALLY visit the Louisville Slugger museum. They have a Louisville Slugger bat that is several stories long (4?), propped up against the outside of the building. You might have to be a little creative to actually get the entire bat in the picture, though...

Have a nice day!

In Gardner, MA there is another big chair; I think it's bigger than the others on your site. Garder used to be have a big furniture-making industry and calls itself "The Chair City." If you are ever in north central Massachusetts, bring your camera to the big chair in Gardner. And in Winchendon, an adjoining town, there is a big rocking horse (Winchendon calls itself "Toy Town"), so you could get 2 pictures for one trip.

I'm VASTLY amused at your website and have always been interested in very small and very large things.

I hope I'm not sending you on a wild goose chase, but I recall there being on display "THE WORLD'S LARGEST STOVE" at the Michigan State Fair Grounds in Detroit when I was a youngster.

We're talking a HUGE monster, a wooden replica of a cast-iron model from, maybe, the 1930s, that stood at least two or three stories tall. It was still on display as late as the mid-70s when I moved from Detroit. But even then there was ugly talk of removing it because it seemed "out of place" and sponsorless. But there it sat, year in and year out, at the entrance to the State Fair Grounds.

I loved the darn thing primarily because it was just so huge and pointless and old. I hope you can track it down and get your picture taken next to it. I figure if you're willing to travel to Detroit to get your picture taken with the UniRoyal Tire, you'll go there for a huge stove...

--Mike in Dallas, Texas

There is another "Big Indian" in Ironwood, Michigan. I used to live there when I was a child and we always played in the park where he is. Ironwood is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a short distance from the Wisconsin/Michigan border. It is actually attached to Hurley, WI. and you go over the Wisconsin River bridge and are in Ironwood. I can't quite remember, but I think it is Hiawatha. It has to do with Lake Superior and the Chippewa Indian Tribes in the area. He is over fifty feet tall, as I remember and appears on alot of postcards too.

You might want to check him out if you get up in that direction.

Happy Hunting. --

I was just looking at your webpage and wanted to let you know about some "larger than life" Christmas things. There is a giant Santa and Snowman in Frankenmuth, Michigan. It has the world's largest Christmas store and has these statues outside.

While i would be very surprised if you hadn't already heard of it, I encourage you to see Leonardo da Vinci's horse. It is located at the Fredrick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Hey, great idea for a website! What a fun hobby!

You should go back to the Unaroyal Tire off of I-94 in Allen Park, MI and get a new picture done. They change it once in a blue moon, and now it has a gigantic nail sticking out of the top on an angle... advertising for their "nail resistant" tires. It's really kinda neat!

Did you know that it was originally once a part of the World's Fair displays waaaaay back when? I don't know much more than that, but I'm sure you could look that up online somehow.

Great images, keep them coming. =)

Dear Jim,

If you're ever in the area again you will want another picture of you with the Uniroyal tire in Allen Park, MI. It now has a big nail sticking out of it.

Remember the old stove that sat in front of the State Fairgrounds and prior to that, Belle Isle? It seems to me that it was restored, but I don't know where it is now.

Here are some pics. - http://detnews.com/history/stove/stove.htm

Hey --

Just a tidbit of information on the Uniroyal Tire. Don't know whether you want to include this or not, but inside that tire is a ferris wheel! The amusement park ride was put out of commission and used as a framework. Then the tire was constructed around the outside!

Great pics!

I loved your page - what a neat hobby! I have a few things that (if you're traveling) you should be able to catch:

Cherry and spoon sculpture (Minneapolis, MN) - this is a famous sculpture outside of an art gallery.

Various at Legoland in Mall of America (Bloomington, MN) - there's a whole bunch of different large sized objects here, made entirely of Legos - wasn't sure if that would count or not, but worth mentioning.

Hi there! I thought your site was cool... And I know of an enormous Snow Man in St. Paul, MN which is on hwy.36 and McKnight. It has been there since I was a kid. No one ever takes it down, and it's roughly 3 storeys tall.

Good Luck!

The site name is:

and it is broken down into categories of animals/things/etc.

ENJOY!!

Dear Jim:

I enjoyed your "big things" page and wanted to tell you about the 50' tall Jolly Green Giant in Blue Earth, Minnesota. It's a must see! That's me waving by his feet. It's too bad the light wasn't better so you could see his features more, but my husband and I found it, er, him, while we were driving back from Montana to northern Indiana and didn't have time to wait for better light. There were also plenty of giant cows in Wisconsin, almost a dime a dozen. You could do a Wisconsin trip and focus solely on different variations of cows.

I don't know if you're ever in central Minnesota, but the area boasts at least two large animals. The more southern of the two, a large Walleye, is found on the Mille Lacs western lakeshore in Garrison, nearby a Dairy Queen. The second animal is another deer, appropriately found in nearby Deerwood northwest of Garrison. Hope this helps!

Good luck!

In case you are not already aware of it, there is a region of the country that is chock full of big (huge) animal art. I grew up in the heart-of-the-lakes region of Minnesota. It seems that every town there has there own mascot. For starters, my hometown of Pelican Rapids is home to the world's largest pelican (standing two stories tall on the banks of the local rapids, of course). Nearby Rothsay has the world's largest prairie chicken comprably sized. Fergus Falls has the largest otter. Bemidji is home to Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. There are countless more in the area. In a well-planned weekend, I think you could add substantially to your interesting collection.

Jim,

Kudos on your humorous and informative sight; however, I'd be less than a good neighbor if I didn't point out that, by traveling through Michigan, you've come close to, but have not yet achieved, the Valhalla of big things. I offer the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin and the book The Colossus of Roads by Karal Ann Marling as the Holy Grail of your search. Minnesota (my home state) is the home of Paul Bunyan (don't let those impostors in Michigan dissuade you) and as a result giant statues of Paul and Babe are found throughout the state. In addition, Minnesota and Wisconsin lead the nation in the per capita incidences of giant fiberglass fish. For the arty set, Minneapolis' Walker Art Center's sculpture garden features a giant spoon and cherry by Claus Olderberg.

Happy hunting!

I don't live on campus and go to a satellite of the main school, but every once in while I visit Springfield the town Drury is located in. There is a restaurant and I can't remember the exact name of it, but they have a GIANT Fork stuck in the ground right outside the restaurant. Just thought you might like to know about it. I'm sure if you called down to Springfield, MO. and asked somebody would know what you were talking about because it is huge and very visible to all. Gotta run. bye

Hi Jim- I enjoyed your Big Photos. If you ever get to Las Vegas, at the corner of West Sahara Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard (two major streets- the intersection is about 7 miles from the Strip) there is a McDonald's with a huge (two stories high) thing of french fries and a soft drink cup which is actually attached to the building itself.

By the way- two sets of friends and I do something similiar. As of February '99 we started a Superlatives Contest. You know- biggest, highest, smallest, oldest, etc.

Our rules- We have to visit the site in person and either have a picture of ourselves as proof or have two people as witnesses. We also have to include the documentation that the thing is the biggest, oldest, etc.

We usually find this by sending away for travel literature before going on a trip. Signs made ourselves won't be allowed, but any other signs at the site stating the superlative are allowed. We are collecting these and will show them to each other for the contest next time we all get together, which is usually once every four or five years.

I enjoyed your web site! - Deb

Hi Jim- I forgot to tell you about a couple of other big things in Las Vegas. One is the biggest coke bottle in the country (possibly the world) on the Strip, near the MGM Grand.

The other is the biggest flashlight in the country. This is at the University of Las Vegas campus, on Maryland Parkway. - About a mile or two from the Strip. It is near the performing arts halls. It is a sculpture that they paid an artist a lot of money to do. It looks like a real flashlight only huge. It faces with the light shining up.

And of course there are the two huge guitars at the Hard Rock Hotel, on Harmon at Paradise. Good luck in your search! - Deb

Jim,

You might know of this already, but incase you don't, there is a big Indian in western NY. It is located on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservsation off Rt. 5 south of Buffaloe, NY.

This "Indian" has been around for quite some time. I remember seeing it at winter carnivals on Honoyoe Lake when I was a youngster. I believe it was owned at that time by a beer company, Iroqoiu Beer. It was bought by the owner of a small garden store and displayed in East Avon, NY for a number of years. The present owners bought it 15-20 years ago and moved it to the reservation.

Hope you find it and post a picture sometime soon.

I've always thought someone should go all around the world and take pictures of BIG things. Some of my favorites are a big duck out east on Long Island, New York. I grew up on LI and that's way it's a favorite.

Am now living in Virgina and in Staunton, there is a sprinking can and also a big pot of flowers. While in Minnesota I saw a sub place and took a picture of their sandwich.

There is a statue of a moose in Mooresville, NC that would really fill the bill. It is sitting behind this little drive in restaurant on Highway 150. It is taller than the building itself. In fact it is so large that the local city council said that it was too large to sit out front on the roadway. they said that the moose caused auto accidents. At the present time it sits behind the restaurant, but you can still see the head over the top of the building. During the Christmas Holidays, the owner brought it out front and decorated it with christmas lights. This is a must for your collection.

Hey, Jim,

For years I've been taking pictures of myself in front of giant things. In my collection, I always wear the same outfit for these pictures...an oversized yellow rubber raincoat, a big yellow hat, and rubber boots. When I started doing this I didn't realize that embarrassmet would be a large component of the project, as I often take the photo with the camera on a tripod, with a timer, and end up clomping into the picture in my raincoat, in public venues. Once I get the raincoat on, however, I feel much more secure.

A couple years ago I flew to Mt Rushmore to get The Picture, and found the Rapid City area a hotbed of giant things. Some time this year I want to try to go to Newark, Ohio, where there is a nine story office building in the shape of a picnic basket. I just got a scanner and will transfer my album to the web one of these days. Loved your website...I understand completely.

There is a restaurant near Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster, PA with an airplane on top it. There is a farm market on RT 50 in Maryland, near Easton with a giant strawberry. I think at other times, they have other vegetables. And Linvilla Farms orchard in Media PA has a giant rag doll at Halloween. And Zipperheads on South St, in Philadelphia PA is covered with giant ants.

Also just off of Route 413 North on 202 E. (maybe 1 or 2 miles from 413) heading towards Peddlers Village there is another large chair in front of a furniture store.

A double header in this area. If you take 202 W off of 413 (about 1 mile) heading towards Doylestown. There is an artist who does woodcarving with a chain saw. His mailbox is and oversize chainsaw and he usually has other projects in his yard (bears, eagles, etc..) that would be worth a picture.

I hope this helps.

Rich

Hey Jim, cool page. A friend directed me to it because I have a vaguely similar hobby of having my picture taken with unusual things, but my unusual things are sports mascots (www.bigfool.com/mascots).

You are probably already aware, but just in case: there's a sculptor named Claes Oldenbourg who has done a lot of big things. He did the clothespin in Philadephia that you already have a picture with. He's also done an enormous book of matches in Barcelona, and a huge garden hose and faucet in Freiburg, Germany. You'll have to keep an eye out for his work.

Hi,

I really enjoyed the photos on the website, but I have to tell you that it's a blue TERMITE in Providence!

Richard Crowell

MarcyW1

Have you seen the big ol bug right outside of the Providence, RI airport (on the freeway on the way to Providence)?

Barbara Naylor

Here in the smallest state in the Union, we have a famous "Big, Blue Bug," which is located, and visible from, interstate 95 south, just outside of Providence. If you ever get to New England, I think you'd look great with the bug, and it would make a fine addition to your page. By the way, the Big Blue Bug often dresses for special occasions and holidays!!

SOUTH CAROLINA

Hi, I happened to check out your pictures on my ISP home page and remembered there is a water tower shaped like a baseball in Fort Mill, SC. There is a minor league baseball team there with a stadium ( the Charlotte Knights ). It is located off I-77 between Charlotte, NC and Rock Hill, SC. You can see it from the interstate. Thanks for your big pictures. Sometimes I think we all could take a few minutes to appreciate the simple ( or silly ) things in life. I will continue to bird dog for you along the way. Thanks again.

James Lefler
Charlotte, NC

On US 301, south of Orangeburg SC, going south, on the right hand sign is an old coffeehouse, now closed, that has a old fashioned coffee pot on the roof. It is about 17 ft tall, silver. I always watch for it on my way to visit family in GA. I've traveled this route for over 30 years and remember when the coffee shop was open and the spout issued steam.

Also, I'm sure you've heard about the VERY large chair in Thomasville, NC on Hwy 85. Thomasville is obviously known for its furniture making. This chair makes all the others in your collection look small.

And last, but not least, in St. Augustine, south on US 1, is a Moose Lodge that has an oversized moose with full rack standing in the middle of a pond. It is just south of the lighthouse. The keep it in very good condition, it has been there for over 20 years that I remember.

I enjoyed your site. Keep it up.

Toni Shepherd

We enjoyed your pictures.

One correction though. In the write-up on the Peachoid outside of Gaffney, South Carolina, the highway is I-85, not I-95. We're not criticizing, but thought you might want it correct.

Keep up the good work!

Hello! Your site is pretty cool. In Huron, we have what is called the "World's largest pheasant" It sits on top of a building. At one time they sold the building and were going to sell it to someone out of town. The whole town was in an uproar and now the pheasant is being restored by a committee. Huron South Dakota-population about 12,000. If you would like more info let me know.

Hi there,

On I-45 in Texas, just north of Houston is an ridiculously huge white stone statue of Sam Houston. It's easily 5 stories high. Funny thing is, they didn't install it as one giant statue. For a while it was just a huge stone pair of pants standing on the East side of the highway! I wish I'd gotten a picture of that!

If you're ever in Texas, try to catch it.

Hi!

Read about your site in an antique and collectors newsletter and looked through your pictures of big people. At the Texas State Fair, there is a big person by the name of Big Tex. Maybe one fall you could make it to the fair to have your picture taken with him.

I have always found large roadside art interesting, especially the food, i.e., ice cream cones, donuts, etc.

Thanks for the website.

A.M.

June Kelso

In Dallas Texas in February when the State Fair arrives there is an enormous statue of a cowboy named Big Tex. You should check it out.

Jan and Terry Todd

Do you know about the Big cowboy at the Dallas, TX fairgrounds?

Jim,

Saw your website via Yahoo Weekly Picks. If you're ever in Texas, go south....way down south to a little town called Hidalgo. It has a giant killer bee!http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/TXHIDbee.html

Hidalgo is about 2 miles from the border between Texas and Mexico. It's about 10 miles south of McAllen, TX. McAllen is about 300 miles south of San Antonio.

Steph Mineart

Jim,

On highway 40/old route 66 between Oklahoma City and shamrock, texas, we saw The Northern Hemisphere's Largest Cross, the leaning water towers, a giant indian, a giant cowboy, The "Thing" (I don't know what that was because it was dark when we passed, but they advertised it for 45 miles in advance). We didn't stay on 66 too long, or supposedly we could have seen a lot more from texas on into Arizona.

I love your page, I'm glad I visited, and I'll do what I can to bird dog for you.

Hey, I know it would be a long drive or plane ride, but down here in TX, things are "bigger" At Dinosaur State Park in Glen Rose, you'll find life sized dinosaur statues that are very real looking. Right now, here in Keller (close to Ft. Worth) we're having a grand opening of a Target store, and they have a giant inflatable light bulb on display. We also have all kinds of inflatables at our balloon festival in Plano every year. I'm sure you've probably run across most of them in your travels.

Well, I'll keep looking. I enjoyed your site very much.

Thanks,

Jim,

Yes, it's fine for you to put on your page a link to mine. I appreciate you doing it.

I took a look at your page -- it's great! Really enjoyed it. I can see that you have got the collecting fever.

My family and I were just down at Port Aransas for a few days. I got a picture of the world's largest pecan at Seguin, Texas. And a tall wooden sea captain sculpture at Port Aransas. I hope to add both of those to my page as soon as I get a chance. Yes, I too have a list of things I hope to photograph some time.

I will also put on my page a link to your page.

Happy collecting!

If you get on I-80 from Salt Lake City to Wendover Nevada I don't really know how far, but smack dab in the middle of nowhere there is an enormouse concrete fruit tree that is some lost soul's absract peice of art. Jim, I've an addition for you, if you're ever up in northern Vermont. Route 89 edges up Lake Champlain in northern Vermont to the Canadian border, where the route changes to route 133. Maybe 20 miles or so, (if even that) after the border, on route 133 in Québec, there's a huge Bob's Big Boy type man, dressed in a red coke shirt; it seems to me that he's holding fries, though I'm not sure.

Very neat web site, congratulations.

Hi--Liked your site. A neighbor down the road (I don't know them but if they live within a few miles of you around here they're a "neighbor") has a sofa and two chairs on their front lawn shaped from evergreen bushes (boxwoods?) They're huge and you could probably sit in them if you had on thick pants and had a ladder to climb up onto them. Have wanted to do this myself since I first saw them a few months ago. They're in Powhatan County, Va, between Richmond and Charlottesville.

Anyway, some thoughts: How about the big clothes pin (an art piece that orginally was going to be a screw but that was too political) beside city hall in Philadelphia? Here in Spokane WA there's a huge milk bottle on a building on Garland Street.

Hmmmm, well that's all I can think of for now, but I'll keep my eyes open for it and let you know.

Sincerely,

Krista Quigley

Rick Gilbert

I enjoyed your web-site. A few possibilities come to mind. I know of a place where there is a cow that I think is bigger than the one you are pictured with. It is just off of I-90 in Janesville, Wisc. which is a little north of Rockford, IL.

There is a big Patriot sitting in a chair on Route 25 near Elgin, IL. and there is one of those huge chairs you can sit in which is located at Rockhome Gardens near Arcloa, IL.

I can give a little more precise info if you are interested.

Enjoy your endeavors.

Well, you have a very nice inflatable piggy on your site. Here in Racine, WI there is a pig outside of one of the Piggly Wiggly grocery stores. Wonder if it would be big enough for you. Hi Jim,

Loved your site. If you're ever in Canada, you shouldn't miss three of Ontario's "biggest" attractions: The Big Apple on Highway 401 some distance east of Toronto, as well as Sudbury's Big Nickle (a regional must-see!) and Wawa's giant metal goose, both on the Trans-Canada Hwy. in the Province's great white north.

Thanks for the amusing photos,

There is a giant nickel in Sudbury, Ontario, ironically outside of Big Nickel Mine, that is the largest nickel in the world (about 30 feet high). There is also "The Big Apple" outside of Belleville, Ontario (11/2 hours east of Toronto) that can be seen from highway 401. Just stumbled across your site and these two items came to mind. Hope they help. Happy hunting!

Hi,

You say you travel, but you probably don't get as far as Australia, where you would be pleased to find the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, the Big Pineapple on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, the Big Rocking Horse in Gawler, South Australia, the Big Guitar in Tamworth, New South Wales, plus there is a big sheep somewhere here, a big yabbie (shrimp), a big cow, plus lots of other 'big' items.

Take a trip downunder to add to your 'big' collection.

Keep up the great photos - wishing you much luck on your adventures

EUROPE

UNITED KINGDOM

Mr & Mrs Harnwell Jones

Hey you crazy dood!

We live in London, England, and though we were the only loony's out here. You see, we used to collect outsized object, and have sort of stopped now because of the lack of floorspace. They're not huge, but we do actually own them. Here's what we have...

A 5 foot Playmobil pirate (most people think he's a Lego man, but he SO isn't!)

3x 1 foot Lego bricks (yellow, red and blue)

A 5 foot packet of mint candies (real one it around 4 inches) standing at the moment in our kitchen

A 1 foot long Chuba Chups lolly

A tea cup the size of a bucket

A 1 and half foot tall tin of baked beans

A 2 foot pencil with lead in it, that really writes

A 1 foot penny (money box) from 1968, has the Queen's head on one size and a lion on the other like the real thing

A 2 foot bowling skittle

A 3 foot lipstick with cap

A 2 foot banana (fibreglass)

A 4 inch pencil shaprener (rather than the half inch real thing)

A 1 foot Oreo cookie (tin)

A 1 foot bulldog clip

An 8 inch packet of cigerette's (about twice scale)

We had a 6foot 6inch cactus, made by me, (paper mache) sitting in a 2 foot tall, 3 foot wide flower pot, which totally out grew our little house and got trashed. It was around 2 and a half feet in diameter.

I guess most of our stuff is big, with the lipstick, Lucifer the Pirate and the mints real big, but most is 2 - 4 times the size of the real thing. We never include inflatables, only objects that look like the real thing.

Like I say, we've sort of stopped now, mainly because we live in a (by American standards) tiny apartment, but when we get that warehouse....!

Keep in touch!

Steve and Tara
